Hi and bienvenue! I’m Claudia, owner and founder of The Paris Apartment. After a few years in the corporate world of New York, I decided to go it on my own and opened a small store in the East Village.

The store was great fun and inspired a decorating book entitled, The Paris Apartment, Romantic Decor on a Fleamarket Budget. It’s my baby and I’ve had a great time creating a company focusing on the things I love. My latest book is Paris Flea Market Style and it’s of course about the Paris markets, where to shop and what to look for. I shot the photos and it’s full of color pics. I created an iPhone App called Keys to the Fleas so it’s easy to take the info on the go if you’re in the city and need to know how to get there on the metro, maps of the markets and general tips.

My business is evolving every day and I’m working hard to build the brand, produce heirlooms and provide personal, top quality service. My business, brand and reputation mean everything to me and I will go out of my way to make my clients happy.

I’m an Aries so there are lots of irons in the fire. For inspiration watch 20s and 30s movies, read books on everything from design to the study the history of women as flappers, early decorators and hostesses. I collect tiny things; fabrics, vintage trinkets, love letters, & satin ribbons, and am fascinated by 1700s France in the ‘Age of Enlightenment’, when all things were works of art and philosophies were flowing. A fairy tale world, now just fairy dust, but the objets left behind are magnifique! Even a tiny scrap of cloth can be exquisitely intricate and I love to get lost in things like that!

On the other hand, I adore the fairy tale we’re living right now, building a civilization as incomprehensible as the pyramids or Versailles. I love knowing there are mysteries we can’t conceive of that  will be here to amaze us next week. I can’t wait to see what’s next. Mostly I’m happy we’re all going green and I try to create very little waste and recycle wherever I can. I visualize world peace and hope that we’ll get a grip on harnessing solar and wind energy any day now. I believe we have the power to shape and change the world to our image.

Above all, I’m glad you’re here. So much of my inspiration comes from other bloggers, creative photographers, readers, writers, armchair travelers, crafters and your passions. Thank you for your beautiful blogs and generous, sweet comments. They mean so much to me. Please say hi when you can and share either your blog or one you adore!

With lots of love, Claudia

p.s. If you got this far: feel free to use any of my images, just credit and link to it, s’il vous plait et merci beaucoup! If you follow me I’ll follow back.

p.s.s. if you ever wanted to know why i write the blog in all small letters, i’ll tell you now: it’s cause all day long i have to be miss meticulous with letters and emails and articles and and and and! this is my little corner where i can just write freely without worrying or having to be perfect. et c’est tout! ok, back to work!

Have a quick question which you might be able to help with? In your experience have you ever seen a logo like mine ( see http://www.lilygardner.com ) I know I have seen something like it from 30s 40s Paris either couture or perfume but cant remember? I am scouting sites! Now I am off to have a good look through all your postings – just for fun. Well done, absolutely beautiful!

Question for you – My sister, who has been living in the UK for the last few years, will soon be visiting Paris before she returns to Australia. When I visited her in July last year and we went to a shop called V V Rouleaux which was filled with ribbons, braids and trims. Do you know where there might be similar places for her to visit in Paris?

    Claudia,

The Little Bookroom has published several unique Paris travel guides, ranging from fashion boutiques to patisseries, all catering to the sophisticated traveler seeking an authentic experience abroad. We have recently put out the first English version of Pudlo Paris, the renowned Parisian restaurant guide by Gilles Pudlowski. Additionally, Literary Paris profiles thirty writers who famously made Paris their home, and provides the traveler with itineraries based on their preferred cafés, salons, homes, and haunts, as well as the scenes and settings of their literary works.

If you are interested in receiving either of these two books, or any other Paris books by The Little Bookroom, I would be happy to send you complimentary copies. I would advise browsing our website (http://www.littlebookroom.com/guidebooks.html), as you may be intrigued by our extensive “France” section.

    Hello Claudia!
I was just searching for some photo of Tamara Lempicka’s work to put as my wallpaper and I ran to your page. I sooooo loved it! I am an artist, recently moved to Montreal, preparing to take the big jump into the artistic society of this continent. In 2004 I spent six beautiful months in Paris, doing a semester at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and I totally fell in love with that magical city. I am so glad I found you and so much more people that have the passion for beautiful things, Paris and all its refined details, art and an artistic, free way of living. I thought it might be interesting to show you my work inspired by the women of the 20’s. No one in particular but the images in my head just made me paint these faces. The idea is continuing to grow in my head and now I am making something new…I will soon put it on my page  So there it is, if you have a minute to visit my blog, go to the FACES album. I think you might like it ;)
Thank you for sharing a bit of your beauty with us!!!

    Hi Claudia!!
I just had to come by and tell you how much I’ve just LOVED coming to your wonderful blog. I’ve just helped start up a new online company called http://www.66degrees.com that’s a online gallery and a social network for people that love art and design. Anyway, one of the great things about my job is that it’s forced me to go scour the web in search of like minded creative souls, and I can’t tell you how many wonderful people I’ve found in my travels… and I consider you to be one of those people, Claudia!! Keep up the GREAT work!! I hope you’ll check out our site sometime, and look forward to hopefully corresponding with you sometime, too… but until then, thanks again… and keep up the great blogging!!!

hi! First and foremost, am obsessed with your book, and now your blog!! Such beautiful, creative images you conjure to kick up my imagination in redecorating my apartment…..anyhow, on the back cover of your book, there is a black and white striped curtain in the background which seems to be of a luxe fabric like silk moire taffeta. I have searched the entire garment district in NYC, but haven’t been able to find anything even vaguely similar. All i have been seeing is tiny vertical stripes or a wider stripe on a thick cotton canvas. Any tips?

Thanks again and keep up the beautiful imagery!!!

I just love the pictures on this site. How ironic to me that you live in Miami now. I think Miami is antithetical to all things subtly lovely like your pictures. I’m from there originally and I lived in NY 15 years and now I live in Paris. I spent a year a few years ago in Miami again working at an ad agency there and it drove me to move to Paris. (Went back to NY one year before). All very confusing and why should you care but anyway I moved here to write a book and I was googling around to get some architectural detail terms for my book. Still trying to find the word. I think I have a copy of you Paris Apartment book. Did you publish it a long time ago? I think my mother bought it for me when I was in high school or college? Where is that book now.. I would love to have it again. Anyway, I have a blog that I update not as often as I used to with http://www.girlonthestreet.com which was how I started my career in brand strategy and trend research but it’s to honor creative women and female leaders globally. I’ll add your blog. Would love to be in touch. Want to hear what you’re up to in Miami and what you think of the place.

Dear Claudia, truly wonderful passion of yours, the french.
It is hard not to like it, it has it’s own dimension in many ways.
I have to try and find your book here in Sweden or elsewhere.
My passion for the french life started over 25 years ago, living there, studying. I, still today frequently tend to keep on finding french treasures, when looking for antiques. Very often I am not even aware of it being french, my eyes just catches them and I get carried away. Many things shown on my blog are french finds.

So, I will keep myself updated, reading your inspirational blog, thanks for sharing……Ingela

It’s very beautifully done, you’ve created a unique, personal voice, one that I haven’t come across in a blog in a long time.

Just as an example, I would love to buy an old rattan cafe’ chair. Do you have any idea what something like that would cost to ship? Just curious… any help would be most appreciated.

    Salut Claudia!
I’ve just come upon your blog and am enchanted. We must be kindred spirtis as I have made the big plunge a couple of times and changed lives and countries. I live now in the Paris area – came here to do my art about 15 years ago and have never left. I’m sure you understand! I am new, however, to blog-land, having just started a fledgling blog myself with my artwork on it, and I am fascinated by this incredible collective being that is the internet! Who wudda thought we would all be able to be in touch with each other so easily and the world would end up like this? Anyway, I wish you absolute happiness and tons of fun and fulfillment as you make your transition. I can’t wait to get some time to peruse your blog in detail – and if you get a minute, take a look at mine. Bisous from Paris, Aliaena

  188. Leigh Chandler replied:

Oh Claudia, I’m so happy you found me! What a great compliment to have you comment on one of my offerings. I too, started my business in 1993 and traveled to Paris and all over France at least five times a year. I was importing all things French and even went on buying trips to Maison d’Objet before it moved to Villepinte. I was the first to import the Boutis, I’m sure. I miss it so, but since I have married a Belgian, I at least get to travel all over that country. I identify with so much of what you write about yourself – I am an Aries, as well;-) One of the first products I imported was all Belgian and Italian Linens from Muriel Grateau, embroidered pillows by Jean Francoise Lesage, linens from Olivier Desforges, etc. (sorry about my French spelling, it has been too long). We’ll have to chat sometime as I had so many fabulous experiences with the top textile designers in the 90’s!

    Dear Claudia,

What can I say? Your exquisite taste, your wonderful blog, your generosity…

I want only blogs on my favorites that I really love (with the occasional exception of blogs just because they’re written by people I love). Yours is going up the second I finish writing this paean to you. In every way you’ve captured that elusive, beautiful art de vivre, joie de vivre esprit that is so quintessentially French.

Do you ever shop over here? If I lived in the States I’m sure I would be ordering wonderful finds from you all the time.

On the weekends I’ve started talking about decoration because it’s the other area I love so will definitely mention you therein.

Also, I have such admiration for women who have the courage to completely reinvent their lives.

    Best regards,
    Tish

    Dear Claudia,

Your world is sumptuous. It has been a delight to browse through the photos. I love Paris so much that I decided to live there.

Thanks to your recent book, many will discover the secrets of Parisian interiors. Wouldn’t it be magic if we could actually live in such interiors, even if only for several days ?

This is the dream I have with my new venture, http://www.parisharing.com. The idea is to make it both simple and secure for Parisians to rent their apartments while they are away.

Well, I’m not the only one in the world to have thought of such a thing, but the website I will be launching will focus on building a social network for people to be able to build trust before entering into such transactions.

I was wondering if the owners you met for you book would be interested in this project. I would be happy to promote the sale of your book on my website.

Do write if you see potential here.

Hi Tasha, Great to hear from you, sorry it took so long to get back to you, it’s been a crazy week! Glad you took some time to say hi, I’m happy you’re enjoying the blog :) As for the name, it was inspired by an a apartment I stayed in in Paris on a trip with a friend. We stayed in her aunt’s Paris Apartment and the phrase came back to me the day a few days after I opened my shop. It was inspired by all the frenchy furniture I was collecting. Up to that point it was Claudia’s Clutter so you can imagine how focused I became! Hope you have a great Sunday night! Claudi

Sammy Davis Junior first met Frank Sinatra there and, before the theatre was built in the 20s, it was the original site of Henry Ford’s carriage house where he experimented with the first designs for cars.

Hi Claudia, I found your wonderful site and many other beautiful blogs through Tara Frey Book. I love it so much. I am new to blogging, and I wish my blogs were as beautifully designed as yours. My blog is fitness, so I am not sure how creative I could really get. Thank you for making this beautiful place. :)

    • Tatianna replied:

Hi Claudia :) Thank you so much for your reply, you are so sweet. I am still new at blogging, but I hope that I will get more creative with it. Im going to do more pictures. What I love about your blog is all of these amazing pictures. I am a lover of anything antique or French. If it was up to me, I would keep my whole house with antiques but my husband hates it. But now I am going to visit your blog all the time, it’s so beautiful. I have this dream of living in France. I always tell my husband that I hope he gets a contract to work in France so we can move. He works for Cirque Du Solei and I am keeping my fingers crossed, some day we can go there. Thank you again, for replying, I will be back all the time :)

As I am workin for the French coffee company, we´ve created a microsite where we put interesting articles about french design, fashion, culture, etc. And I love your two photos – http://parisapartment.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/photo1.jpg and http://parisapartment.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/16843_2_lg.jpg. Please, can you write me if we can buy your pics?
    Thank you, Marketa

      Hi Marketa,
      Thank you for writing.
Those two photos are from the internet and I’m not sure where they came from!
If there’s a link on the page it’s probably the original website I took them from.
So sorry I don’t have more info!

Looking forward to visiting your store next visit to NYC.

  268. Sarah @ chevrons & stripes replied:

    Hi Claudia,

I recently moved from NYC to Miami Beach as well so it’s inspiring to hear your story of starting over. I think I’m really a New York gal at heart but the slower pace of life at the beach is definitely so nice. Is there anywhere on your blog where you share some of your favorite South Florida spots? We are looking for some cool little haunts (design stores, restaurants, etc.) and are finding them a BIT hard to come across.

Love your aesthetic and looking forward to reading more!

    Sarah

  270. Elina Kauppinen replied:

    Bonjour from Finland!
I fly to your blog from Pinterest-link-to-link surfing, and mighty glad that I did :) I read few newest pages and sighted quite many times, so my curiosity just rose and rose.
After reading your “biography” I’m even more glad I found here; I agree with you on many points like making it green and, of course, the love for Paris! We went the on 2010 for family vacation, so our trip to Paris was actually just for the drive from and to the air port and a sight-seen bus drive on evening/night time. Tho, even that was enough for me and my hubby to realize, that we should go there again, with better time (and without the kids ;) ) so could really enjoy the city.
Sorry about the long writing on comment box – this blog just made me on The Mood… :)

  271. Paris Rendez-vous replied:

Hi, Claudia! I just found your blog and have spent the morning reading your posts! I live in Maryland, have been in the antiques business for some time. I had a brick and mortar shop for a bit, but now do shows. I have been wanting and dreaming about going to France for a while, to “pick” the fleamarkets to be able to just take my inventory to another level. So, my question is, being a newbie to France, do you yourself ever take people through the markets with you when you go, or know of someone who does that you can put me in touch with? I would most appreciate it! Janet
