what a difference a century makes
or not…!
these pics are from the ny blizzard of 1899. i love t to see new york through the ages and can only imagine what it must have been like living there 100 years ago. so much has changed and still so much is exactly the same. what a rock!
at least i won’t be digging my carriage out this year! but i’m on my way today and hope the flights aren’t too backed up.
talk about being on ‘the grid’!

i guess there were a lot of pre-war fireplaces crackling!
in my search i came across a film that was made about the blizzard at the time. it’s a silent and apparently a classic at that. you can find it here: imdb.com/title/tt0230326
well, that’s enough stalling, have to go and face the music!
i hate the cold but can’t wait to see the bergdorf windows. i have to keep repeating that to stay motivated to leave sunny florida! more from the other side~

oh god i am dreading the cold, i’ve become such a wimp! sometimes i can’t believe i spent so many years digging myself and my stores and cars out of snow drifts in the city. i must have had a completely different constitution! stay warm!!

Boy these photos remind me of my home town of Dunkirk, NY, which is like 30 minutes from Buffalo! I grew up in blizzards like these, and I just loved them!! I remember it being so cold at night, I was a ’70’s little girl and I had to sleep with my hat, scarf and gloves on at night! The streets were not at all visible and the cars were so deeply burried that you had to try to guess where yours was. I love love love your photos! Great job finding these and sharing with your fans:) I live now in Jersey and we just got like 18 inches last night!

oh boy, as a jersey girl, i can relate…my dad always kept the thermostat a couple degrees too low for my liking. i was always in trouble for raising it as soon as i could reach it!

I read somewhere that New York morphs into a completely different city every 50 years. Amazing, isn’t it? At the time the photos you posted were taken, my father’s side was a very prominent NY family, having been one of the first five families sent over by the Dutch West India Company. Unfortunately for me, all that “prominence” was lost in the Great Depression!

that’s an interesting concept. i can see what you mean, though, it’s true. the 50 years between these shots and the 50’s is like another planet, and the difference between the 50’s and now is another universe! the only constant is the city itself.

Beautiful pics. Reminds me, I have to order the survey one from my mom’s house from 1940(ish) from the NYC Dept. of Housing. I made it in and out of NYC over the weekend. They really have it together there. Only caught the Saks windows though, by the time we got to Bergdorf’s the wind was whipping the snow too hard so we skipped it. Safe travels!!

I can understand you leaving warm Florida to cold NYC but NYC is s uch a wonderful city for christmas, full of surprises.
