i have nowhere else to go

isn’t this a fabulous room?

i had to start off tonight with something pretty cause behind the scenes, i’ve been obsessing about something that is not pretty at all! my mom and i were having one of our usual political debates when we stumbled onto a topic we were both passionate about (on the same side, even)! it was the proposed ban on regular light bulbs in favor of the new CFLs or Compact Fluorescent Light models.

below-the-clouds-cfl-chandlier

(i can’t bear to have an ugly CFL on this site, glad to have found a pretty pic at least)!

i don’t want to overload you as there’s so much information, so i actually started a new blog, Stopping at the Green Light, where i’ve been compiling information about the dangers. briefly, General Electric came up with the idea and has spent millions lobbying world wide to have the new bulbs implemented. before gw bush left office, they convinced him and everyone else that these bulbs are safer and more efficient and made a pact to reinvent the market. as for the efficiency, it turns out the opposite it true. if you haven’t already, please read up on these CFLs, and not on the producer’s websites. they contain mercury and harmful vapors if broken and take a ton more energy to produce than regular bulbs. if that’s not enough, GE has moved it’s factories from the US to china where they’re having some really lethal issues with the mercury already. GE would like us to think they’re enLightening us but they’re really just serving their own agenda. besides the additional energy needed to make these, everything from the disposal to the hazards is just not green at all.

CFL

anyway, it’s been plaguing me and this is the only place i felt i could come to get it off my chest and out into the ether. i have a million things i care about but this one is looming in the near future. not to mention that so many believe these lights are soooo green, and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. please look into it yourself, the blog has lots of links and research to learn a lot more. please visit and tell me what you think about the debate.

this is from treehugger.com:

Mercury in CFLs are present as elemental (or metallic) mercury. Once spilled, you can be exposed to elemental mercury by touching it, after which it can be eaten and/or absorbed through your skin. More importantly for health, you can also be exposed to mercury through the air, as elemental mercury vaporizes readily (essentially becomes a gas) and can thus be inhaled into your lungs. Breathing elemental mercury into your lungs is generally more dangerous than if you ate the mercury or absorbed it through your skin. Once inhaled, the mercury vapor can damage the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver.

Even though mercury from the broken CFL is not likely to be dangerous, it would be wise to take extra precautions to minimize mercury exposures. The US EPA publishes guidelines about the specific steps that you should take to clean up mercury in the event that a CFL breaks in your home. Briefly, EPA recommends that (1) you immediately open windows to reduce mercury concentrations inside your home; (2) you do not touch the spilled mercury; (3) you clean up the broken CFL glass carefully and immediately (but not with your hands or a vacuum cleaner), and (4) you wipe the affected area with a paper towel to remove all glass fragments and mercury. EPA further recommends that you place the paper towel and glass fragments in a sealed plastic bag and bring the sealed bag to your local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Site.

is that green to you?

Thanks for posting this, I had no idea…I hate when things we think are better than the old standard turn out to be even worse. I’m beginning to think a switch to candlelight would be the safest bet. Plus candlelight is flattering!

I tried one of these before I read up on them. Of course, when it fizzled, I found I had no where to dispose of the thing. You shouldn’t put them in the trash. Gee. I’m with Nina….give me candlelight.

    Claudia,

I’ve had the feeling for a long time that these CFL lights were going to replace all common lightbulbs, even mini light bulbs we put in chandeliers~Cringe!~
So, I have been buying extra chandelier lightbulbs to store away in case they aren’t available anymore. One day my husband came home with an entire bag full!!! I guess he agrees that a chandelier would look hideous with CFLs.
I didn’t realize that GE was trying to promote their lights as more green in an effort to manipulate us an make millions of dollars. I just thought GE was trying to promote these lightbulbs as more economical. Thanks for sharing this info. I will be visiting your new blog for updates.

      Go candles! beeswax or soy?

I don’t like the buzzing noise the new light bulbs make. Sit near a lamp with one and it sounds like bees or that buzzing you hear on high electrical wires, at least to me. The noise gives me a headache. Yeah… I’m one of those overly sensitive types. I also notice details most people never knew existed. Like how you can’t put a regular lamp shade that has the wire loop to fit over the top of a regular light bulb back on top of a CL light bulb. How do you throw it away? Drive it to a specific recycling center? I bet they raise the price of the new bulbs once everyone is dependent on them too. Yeah… I’m in a grumpy mood tonight too… lol

yes this topic put me in a funk for three days! but it me on a mission. the lights are bad on every level from production to usage to breakage to disposal.

discussing it will give us what we need to take a stand against them.

I guess it depends who is the source of your information because here’s what I’ve understood: “One CFL contains a hundred times less mercury than is found in a single dental amalgam filling or old-style glass thermometer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ”

“By using less electricity, CFLs help reduce mercury emissions from coal-burning power plants, which are the largest source of human-caused mercury emissions in the United States,” said EPA agency press officer Ernest Jones.”

You will be distressed to know that my 4th grade teacher gave everyone in her class an envelope with mercury to take home and play with!! Seriously!! We let it bounce out of the envelope and disperse into balls and then gathered the little balls together with our bare hands into one big ball. I’d forgotten about that.

hi hello, it’s not the mercury in one or two, it’s the cumulative effects. when they say “By using less electricity, CFLs help reduce mercury emissions from coal-burning power plants, which are the largest source of human-caused mercury emissions in the United States,” said EPA agency press officer Ernest Jones.”
they are don’t mention that it takes more to now to source the mercury to insert in the bulb and STILL takes mercury to run the power plants and is now in the hands of millions of us who aren’t aware of the dangers of the vapors.
if one breaks, you’re supposed to clear the room for 15 minutes, open all windows, go back in to clean it all up and dispose of it all as Hazardous Waste! it’s really not green at all if you check into it.

Claudia! I’m so glad you brought this up. My husband switched out alot of our regular bulbs for these things..I came into my son’s room a couple years ago and it had the oddest smell. Basically the thing had “overcooked” and was leaking fumes into my adorable, precious son’s room. Why are we putting hazardous materials into our homes?!! Trish

I’ve always hated the quality of light these things emit, but I had NO IDEA! I just took Leonardo Dicaprio’s advice and snapped them up. I hope your post spreads the word.

It seems with “going green” you just can’t win half the time – at least not if you want the luxuries we’ve all gotten used to, like lighting and plumbing! You can get solar panels, but they only last for so long, and then disposing of them is very un-green. You get a hybrid car, but there’s something about the battery that makes it not so green, etc.!

Oh, and in response to one of your other posts, there is nothing sadder than driving through W.Va, entering that breathtaking valley where Charleston is, rounding the corner and seeing the smog warning signs and then losing all visibility in a big black cloud. I used to get off the highway soon northwest of Charleston to cut over to Ohio, and the lives people were living along those back roads made me very sad. Now it makes me think of Jeanette Walls’ “The Glass Castle”. Wow, I got way sidetracked there.
