Blook Your Blog
yesterday i started thinking about all these gorgeous blogs and the wealth of information they offer. it occurred to me that with the state of big business we have to take care of ourselves. i mean, we love blogger, typepad and wordpress, but who’s to say they’ll live forever? look what’s happening to citicorp and enron. hey, even starbucks could fall. where would we be if our blogs and friends suddenly disapeared from cyberspace? why not think about archiving your blog once a year and call Season 1, or whatever. who wouldn’t want to see The Peak of Chic, volume 1, etc.?
so…my first thought was to put it in pdf form. it’s a lot of work to do each post, so maybe the person hosting the blog can even sell the volumes on their blog for like $5. on the other hand, you could always do the the wayback machine from google which i haven’t explored fully but has possibilities. well thought i’d just throw that out there! what do you think?

I think archiving the blog as a book is a great idea. Blurb actually offers a blog book format that works directly with most blogging platforms. I’ve not tried it yet. http://www.blurb.com/create/book/blogbook

I love the idea especially if it’s design related. I also think that the Way Back Machine only grabs certain days and doesn’t always grab blogs – at least from my experience. I know that if you use Bloglines or Google Reader it captures and saves all of the posts for your favorite blogs which comes in really handy. I can’t tell you how many times I have gone back through my Google Reader to locate something I saw on a blog I love.

It’s hard to remember to do it regularly, but wordpress has an export function that lets you download your blog. You’ll be able to import it into another blog if anything ever happens to yours. It’s under Manage->Export when you’re logged in.

I worry a lot about what happens if Blogger goes away. What do I do about years of posts. I’ve now started having my posts emailed to me as they are published, so I have them in a file. But, I’m not sure if all the links are captured. Good issue to raise!

This would be heartbreaking if the whole system crashed! I agree that we need to put it into book form. Perhaps quarterly..just in case. Each season, new book. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Happy Holidays from Canada!

Great ideas. I guess we all put a lot of time into our blogs and have the same concerns about what will happen to old posts and images. I think I’ll start making pdf’s of all my posts today! Emailing them to yourself is a good idea also. Thanks!

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a beautiful glossy book filled with all of our entries in it – a great gift to pass down to our loved ones. A 21st century diary of sorts!

It’s funny that you mention this. I started my blog specifically so that I could journal for one year and then create my own book – I found out that you can make them at http://www.blurb.com. I love the idea of capturing this time in my life for my daughter to one day read…

I have had these same thoughts too – and thought about using Blurb… I asked Typepad if they would consider offering the same service, but as of now they aren’t going to do so. It would be terrible if we suddenly disappeared!

Alexa has a way back machine. I can go back to 2000 and see wheredidyoubuythat.com (which I used to own) as it was at its conception.

Thank goodness for your post. My holiday list was looking a little shabby and now I’ve found the perfect gift (for myself!) I have saved every sentence I’ve written since high school and I’d love to see my blog along side the shelved copies of all those high school literary magazines.
