another man’s treasure

happy friday everyone! i’m trying my hand at blogging first thing in the morning (ok 10th thing) and have to jet out in about a milisec. going thru the photos again of stuff on my desktop. these are from a huge pile of catalogs and books i found on the street in paris one night and lugged back to the apartment and then home with me. how could i resist?  hope you enjoy them, have a great afternoon!

everything old is new again

hey guys, how’s your sunday? i’m glad to be here with my blog buds. your comments on the last post inspired me so i couldn’t skip sharing the sunday paris markets with you. and it’s helping me go through them with a fresh eye.

i tried to keep this post to reigned in to fabrics and ribbon but it got way away from me. anyhow i hope you enjoy the mishmash of beauty that is the paris flea.

i’ve been saving some shots for upcoming articles so wasn’t going thru them til i need them. and you know how it is when they’re yours, they don’t seem that noteworthy necessarily. but today i’ve been doing a little flea market philosophising and realized that it almost doesn’t matter what the subject is. it’s just incredible to be around so many things that are old but new to you. every doorway holds the anticipation of finding a treasure, big or small…or just a photo!

so although i wasn’t  buying, i did get a lot; my shots. and hey, i can share them!

well i hope you enjoyed our sunday stroll.

now to bring your goodies home! just a tip next time you go:  get a trunk or  suitcase for all your stuff and have it wrapped in plastic at the airport.

it doesn’t have to be a numbered goyard but at least you have options.

maybe just a jewelry case

or if you’re uber practical like me, get one of these t the corner.

by the by i haven’t forgotten about the giveaway!  if you know what i’m talking about, please leave a comment and the random number generator tomorrow will choose a few winners tomorrow!

what i wouldn’t do

happy friday! i’m about to turn into a pumpkin after a day of running around. i’m going thru pics from my trip but instead of the maison show, wanted to head back to my favorite place on earth, the flea markets. between the gems scattered everywhere and the people who make it happen, it’s endlessly inspiring. during the trip i interviewed my favorite vendors to profile them for a series i’m doing for belle maison. (first one is set to run next month i think).

so there’s no real rhyme or reason to this post. it’s just random stuff that passed by. the market is probably starting to open right about now in paris come to think of it. it’s midnight here and missing it is such a sad thought, i’d love to be there right now!

oh well,  let’s pretend we’ve got a coffee and croissant and just stroll through~

salon furniture: my weakness

digging through boxes is my passion!

of all the things i’ll pick up next time, fabric is priority. it’s easy to carry, mostly one of a kind and abundant.

and lace

i always leave with a ton of books. not as practical to carry as fabric but there’s nothing like  leather bound binding.

why? cause it’s silly!

are you into doors and windows? i am completely.

these are a few  shots from my friends who sell at clignancourt and will be in the articles. they talk about where they shop, what they collect, the family business and plans for the future.

i wanted to do the series cause it’s so easy to take the fleas for granted and run through them.

i admire and adore the people who show up to make it happen every single week come rain or shine.

whether you buy or not doesn’t even matter. it’s like disney; a place that’s just perfect, it’s own small world and i’m grateful for it.

well if you’re there this weekend enjoy, we’re there in spirit! bon weekend!

never can say goodbye

hi guys, ca va? all’s well here, just a lot going on. whenever i get back to blogging it seems like i’m still at the tip of the iceberg of the maison objet recap but there was just so much! still, i’m determined to go thru it. so in keeping it organized, tonight’s post covers a couple favorite categories starting with porcelain.

there was a lot of white and cream, i was drawn to how much of it was handmade, with uneven glazes, really tactile and wanting to be held.

playful curves

simplicity; porcelain ceramic, white glazed pots that look like cans

lace pressed into the clay decorating edges of dishes and cups

super delicate and original.

i’m in love with french wood floors so it was great to see traditional styles able to be installed easily with big wooden floor tiles.

different finishes. some are salvaged from old floors and reclaimed wood, making each one unique.

and mixing woods

floors really set the tone.

there were lots of nods to the past in hardware and details. these too were hand forged and were really special and unique.

these little hand made birch nightstand cabinets had clustered gem handles made of coral and amethyst.

lighting was simple, also with a handmade feel

not too serious

organic

and moderne

don’t get me started on the wall art! ok well i better go, i have to be out tomorrow at the crack of dawn.

when i get back i may just wrap up the rest of this show and put er to bed! till then, sweet dreams and enjoy your night!

buttons, baubles bits and bobs

hi guys! i had big plans to blog tonight but instead am going out to see a friend’s newborn! so i’ll leave you with what i started, apparently a collection of small things. lots of the little things in markets make me happy, even buttons or spools. it’s the details that make everything special, n’est-ce pas?

back in the saddle

hey guys, happy sunday!

it’s been almost a week since i’ve turned on the computer besides checking emails. it great to decompress and log off  for awhile.

there’s great stuff going on but to combine it with blogging, FB, tumblr, twitter, emails, articles, inquiries, orders and deliveries it was time to shut down and drive. liz and i have been traveling up and down the coast for the past couple days scouting and curating a really special collection.

but its sunday and i miss my bloggy world  ;)

these pics have been sitting in the folders i keep mentioning, (and they just end up getting forgotten) so i’m determined to go through them. i still get so much joy from the paris flea markets.

The creative dealers are making old suitcases into little loveseats!

the flea market was as much fun as ever but my trip in september was more about the maison objet and not so much a buying trip.

hOwEveR…i’m about to embark on a fantastic event that i can’t talk about yet, but suffice it to say  i’ll be heading back in january to get a container going (or at least part of one)! i’ll keep you posted on it. for now i’m looking at these pics less as just stuff i loved but now am asking if you’d want in your house?  your opinion means a lot to me so let me know what you’re looking for on your french wish list~

it will all be one of a kind

looking thru the pics it seems i’m into flea market art and will definitely be on the hunt for paintings.

portraits?

i wanted this one for myself

this pretty book is signed by the author, colette!

i’m a sucker for ribbon and trim

and all the little things are the essence of the markets.  the elegance that is the paris fleas!

well i best jet, guest are en route for an early dinner! have a great night!

that was then

hi guys, hope you’re winding down from a wonderful weekend. i’ve been going thru pics, reliving the days i got to do what i really love, shop the streets of paris! these shots are all from a brocante in the 17e my friend christine and i hit one sunday morning. you may already know but brocantes and vide greniers are neighborhood sales where residents set up on the street and have a group event, like a giant block party/yard sale. they’re fantastic cause you never know what you’ll find and get to see hoods you’d normally not go to. one new, fun trend is the pop-up. they’re shops that come in for the day if there’s a storefront that’s empty or for rent. i’m kind of going backwards with the pics but this is one that was there that day.

it was such a simple, pretty store. of course i wanted the doors.

from the outside you’d never know what was in there. truth is there wasn’t much, it was just what they did with the few things they had.

wish i got this for my balcony!

the whole street was buzzing with activity. i feel like i’m remembering a dream…

this flower store was on one side

and a super chic party was on the other.

i started to get into folksy art

looking back i regret what i didn’t get. ouch! that’s always a hard lesson to learn. if you love something, get it when you see it!

i’ll never cease to be amazed at the well preserved pieces whipped out at these events. the shoes are from the 30s and in perfect condition.

how is it that there are always trunks full of petticoats and cotton nighties from the 1800s?

i think i regret not getting her most of all (for my neice clare, of course)! well,  i got to enjoy a sunday stroll again and hope you did too! which weekend it was doesn’t really matter, does it?

if you’re in paris and looking for a brocante, check the dates with joel garcia here, or broc a brac here. Paris’ code is 75.

d’accord, that’s it for me c’est soir. bonne nuit!

it’s all in the details

hey guys, happy friday! i’m blogging in the middle of the day, woo hoo! my goal is to tackle the rest of the show in paris. there was so much, mon dieu!

today i’m going thru the textiles. here’s a recap of some of my favorite things in the bedding department~

for me it was a study in simplicity and all the details that go into making it seem so simple.

smocking, hand stitching, classic design, natural fibers and mixing materials were what i seemed to gravitate to.

uneven smocking,  tiny details

one side cotton velvet and the other linen

classic stitches, hand sewn and raw edges

linen comforter with hand-stitched  silk velvet edge

silk and linen comforters

hand stitched cotton toile quilt

ditzy french florals

exacting hand sewn edges on linen scallops

stiff raw linen scallops

italian hand knotted fringe

supersoft linen

linen by the yard

vintage linen was available too

unfinished edges on raw linen ruffles

linen curtains

simple engineering

bright colors, ancient patterns from tibet, the himalayas, polynesian islands and india.

these blankets were one of a kind and and i kept finding them throughout the show. i’m only realizing now how much i wanted so many of them!

vintage fabrics

happy, deconsttucted and playful

and the details were simply marvelous! ok well i better get going, more soon! have a great weekend!

on with the show

allo cheries, how’s life?  seems like forever since i’ve been able to sit back and enjoy blogging. seems no matter how much i tried to keep up with work while i was away, it was just impossible. toss in a couple deadlines for articles and it’s a recipe for vegging instead of blogging.

still, i wanted to get back to the dang maison et objet show recap. if i don’t do it now i never will. i’ve seen the photos a million times but you haven’t.  so i hope you enjoy another day of trends. are you over it yet? there’s still more!

i hoped to have the links up but still have not busted in to the stack of cards and papers but i promise i will. till then, some trends!

meshy chain curtains

i

green walls for indoor rooms

indoor vertical gardens in pockets

simplicity, ingenuity

oversized. natural. dramatic

technology fun

something about houndstooth

was in the air

and lots of linen

authentic, intricate tiles

i

byzantine, moroccan, pompeiian designs

cut leather

overlays

meticulous finishes

on edges

ok well that’s officially it for tonite. i could go on but i’ll finish up tomorrow with textiles and handmade accessories and stuff. good night!

who’s calling the shots?

happy tgif everyone! hope you’re gearing up for a great weekend. i’m enjoying some down time and making an effort to really edit my paris pics. as i was going thru the flea market stuff i started to notice that a lot of the same upholstery trends at the high end trade show were the same as the flea market. kind of makes you wonder which came from where. on the other hand i don’t wonder at all and believe that all trends start at the flea markets of paris!

bright velvets, two tone

contrasting fronts and backs

unfinished pieces

cottony stripes, rough burlap textures and nail heads

classic shapes

attention to detail, two kinds of piping

bright leathers

ticking, stripes and deconstructed cozy casual

box pleat seats and rough linen

stripes and linen

navy linen

hand stitching

more navy linen

bold colors and detailled frames

black and white, floral toile patterns

shiny frames

velvet covered furniture

and greek key trim from the turn of the century. guess everything old really is new again thanks to the creative minds of the paris markets who know just how much to leave on or take off when it comes to showing their wares and chairs. i’m a chair lover and it’s comforting to know that the french understand that ripping all the old fabric off, even if it’s tattered, is an art, creating a sculpture almost, so the new owner will see the history and still be able to put his or her vision on it to make if fresh and mod. well, i’m off, bon weekend!
